At GMT Benelux, we understand that sustainability is not a choice but a responsibility. In a time when environmental awareness and corporate social responsibility are becoming increasingly important, we aim not only to contribute to a better world but also to take the lead. An essential tool in this effort is the R-Ladder, a framework that helps us integrate sustainability into our business operations in a structured and measurable way.
The R-Ladder, developed within the circular economy, is a model that outlines six strategies for using products, materials and resources more efficiently. The six R’s stand for: Refuse & Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repair & Refurbish & Remanufacture, Recycle & Repurpose & Recover. The higher a strategy is on the ladder, the more sustainable it is. The goal is to use as few new raw materials as possible and minimize waste by extending the lifespan of products and materials.
More info about R-LadderR1: Refuse & Rethink: GMT Benelux is working on more innovative rubber formulations to eliminate harmful substances like PFAS from the production chain. Re-evaluating your product composition may seem like a drastic step, but it’s a perfect example of breaking the current production culture and creating a new normal. By focusing on refuse and rethink, we can save raw materials, prevent waste and contribute to a circular economy.
R2: Reduce: At production facilities worldwide, GMT promotes programs to reduce raw material usage. This includes reducing fossil fuels and using solar and wind energy. Additionally, materials such as rubber and metal are reused in various stages of production.
R3: Re-use: At GMT, shock and vibration dampers are designed so that they can be used in multiple product cycles. Used products are tested under the same conditions as new products, ensuring their technical lifespan is fully utilized.
R4: Repair, Refurbish & Remanufacture: GMT is exploring ways to remanufacture rubber-metal parts, both in the factory and with customers. This extends product lifespan and prevents unnecessary material waste.
R5: Recycling & Repurpose: At GMT, both the rubber and metal from dampers are recycled, which reduces waste and saves raw materials. This helps limit landfill waste and pollution.
R6: Recover: Recover is placed at the bottom for a reason. While waste incineration can produce electricity and heat, it still results in the loss of raw materials and CO₂ emissions. Therefore, the goal is always to stay as high as possible on the R-ladder.
At GMT Benelux, sustainability is not a one-time action but a continuous process. We constantly evaluate and improve our strategies to minimize our environmental impact. Moreover, we actively involve our employees, customers and partners in our sustainability goals. Together, we are working towards a circular future where waste is a thing of the past.
With the R-ladder as our guide, we continue to innovate and inspire. At GMT Benelux, we believe that every step counts—and that together we can make a difference for a more sustainable world. Will you join us?
